Coronavirus latest: Health Secretary Sajid Javid names key triggers that would bring Plan B into force in the government's covid winter plan announced on Tuesday.

A highly infectious new variant, 'which had some kind of vaccine escape capabilities' would be of huge concern, said Mr Javid but other factors come into play.

NHS capabilities are at the heart of the government's decision to deploy Plan B. He said: "We need to make sure we don't get to a position again where the NHS becomes unsustainable.

So of course that would be level of hospitalisation, pressures on A&E and on the workforce."

The Health Secretary set nerves jangling on Tuesday when he announced Plan B measures to reimpose masks, working from home and even revive hated vaccine passports.

But he assured the tough measures were just contingency curbs in case the preferred plan of action failed to contain a fresh spike.
