Why is Iaido called "居合道 IAIDO?" Why didn't they just call it "刀道 KATANA-DO?" #Shorts

For example, 剣道 kendo means “the path of the sword,” and 弓道 kyudo means “the path of the bow…” But what is IAI of iaido, the katana martial art? Why didn’t they just call it “刀道 katanado?”

The term “iai” consists of the kanji characters... 居 i and 合 ai, and the origin of this word is believed to come from the saying...

常に「居」て、急に「合」わす

This literally means “to be constantly prepared to face and fight the opponent immediately.”

So this explains the fundamental difference between kenjutsu/kendo and iaijutsu/iaido, whether it’s “Let us fight!” in a war/game, or “I’m ready to fight anytime if someone tries to attack me” to respond to sudden emergencies.

Iaido is not just about wielding the katana, but it's mainly about training your concentration so that you are able to react to any situation calmly.

This is why the culture of iaido especially bloomed during the peaceful Edo period (1603~1868) when there were no more wars, but every samurai always had katana with them and they could get into a fight anytime.
